The Historic District Nomination form and supporting documents were presented to Craig Ewing, AICP, Director of Planning Services, City of Palm Springs. City Planning will form a committee to explore the documents. When the documents are determined to be complete, City Planning will present them to the Historic Site Preservation Board (HSPB). Craig indicated that there may be questions regarding Class One instead of Historic District designation.
The HSPB will conduct a walk-through of the property some time in September. After they make their recommendation, they will hold a public hearing.
The HSPB will send the documents to the City Council and the nomination will be added to their agenda, possibly in November, 2009. A public hearing will be held and the council will vote on the nomination after the hearing.

The HSPB reviewed our application for Historic District. The board unanimously agreed that the Royal Hawaiian Estates should be preserved; however, board member Sheila Grattan thought that the application should be for Class One Site, not Historic District. She conducted a vote which resulted in our application being considered for Class One Historic Site instead of Historic District. Our original application was sent to further review by the HSPB.
October 13, 2009
The HSPB reviewed our application as a Class One Historic Site. The homeowners who were there to support our nomination wore Hawaiian garb and each received a fancy lei, provided by Ed Zavora.
Many thanks to Ron Marshall, Robert Imber, William Kopelk, David Carden, and Gary Johns who spoke on our behalf. Patrick McGrew was unable to attend the meeting but he wrote a passionate letter, which was read by RHE resident Tony Morris. Ed Zavora spoke briefly and thanked the board for reviewing our application. I gave a six minute presentation on nine years of RHE history and the pursuit of historic status.
After much discussion from the HSPB and Craig Ewing, the board voted to re-agendize the November meeting to discuss whether they should move forward with our application for Historic District or Class One Historic Site. The board said they needed more time to research our governing documents to determine which status to pursue. We knew this might be a bumpy ride and today I believe the worst turbulence has passed and it might be OK to loosen our seat belts.
Palm Springs Community Television (PSCTV) Channel 17 will broadcast the meeting again each Sunday at 6:30 PM and each Tuesday at 8:15 AM until the next November HSPB meeting.

I met with Craig Ewing (Director PS City Planning) and John Gilmer (Chair, HSPB) October 27, 2009 and provided them with a legal description of parcel ownership. Ron Marshall (President, PSPF) delivered a letter to city hall this morning to support our application for Historic District.

The HSPB voted 5-2 in favor of sending our application to the city council as the first Historic Residential District in the City of Palm Springs. Board members Sheila Grattan and Brian Strahl dissented from the majority.

The Palm Springs City Council voted 4-1 to make the Royal Hawaiian Estates the first residential historic district in the city of Palm Springs! Don Wexler was there to show his support and offered his congratulations after the meeting.
