Tiki Modern
The Book of Tiki

Sven Kirsten, the world's most celebrated Tiki archaeologist, brings together two recent retro trends of mid-century modernism and Tiki style in his latest book, Tiki Modern. Kirsten shows us how primitivism and modernism were two sides of the same coin in the 1950s and 60s. Royal Hawaiian Estates is featured in this book. I first met Sven Kirsten in 2002 during the Desert Polynesia, A Tiki Weekend in Palm Sprigs event. I was conducting tours of the Royal Hawaiian and he showed up with a group of enthusiastic Tiki fans. His personal knowledge of the property's history was impressive and instrumental in keeping the momentum going all day.
